Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Elizabeth Belle Hunt Alexander, 92, of Statesville,  passed peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Thursday, September 3, 2026. She was born on May 5, 1934, in  Beech Bottom in Brooke County, West Virginia.

Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker, and she lived that role with deep devotion and care. She was the best mom and grandma ever, a homemaker in the truest sense, always making sure her family was well cared for. Her love was expressed in the everyday acts that made a house a home: cooking, gardening, canning vegetables, sewing, and creating clothing for her children out of feed sacks. She was a longtime member of Broad Street Church of Christ, and her faith and steady presence were part of the life she built around those she loved.

Belle found joy in many simple and beautiful things. She loved flowers, cardinals, hummingbirds, animals, the mountains, and the beach. She enjoyed going to Village Inn to eat, and she kept binoculars handy to watch the new kittens playing out at the shed. Her mind was very sharp, and those who knew her will remember how very sweet she was, along with a smile that could light up a room. People lovingly called her “sweet Belle,” and she was always cheerful.

Her family was the center of her life. She is survived by her four children, Richard Alexander (Kay) , Vern Alexander, Gloria Hess, and Joyce Phillips (Scott), who carry forward the care, warmth, and strength she gave so freely. She is further survived by 13 grandchildren; John "Kenny" Hess (Alice), Tracy Moore (Floyd), Julia Burkhart (Fred), Michele Smith (Johnny), Mickey Jordan (Allison), Christopher Jordan (Melissa), Steve Alexander (Natalie), Daniel Alexander (Kristy), Mary Alexander, Benjamin Phillips (Patricia), Joshua Phillips (Tiffany), Matthew Phillips (Sandy), Elizabeth Cannon (Danny); 35 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren, a brother, Bernard Hunt, a sister, Donna Cionni, and many others. The love she poured into her family will remain a lasting gift, and her memory will continue to live in the hearts of those who were blessed to call her mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny Alexander; her father, Burt Hunt, Sr.; her mother, Ocy Treadway Hunt; a grandson, Michael Alexander, a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Alexander, a son-in-law, John Hess, a brother, Burt Hunt Jr., two sisters, Doris Henthorn and Alice Fay Hunt, two brothers-in-law, Homer Henthorn and Ray Cionni; and two sisters-in-law, Katie Hunt and Marie Hunt.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Nicholson Funeral Home, 135 E Front St, Statesville, NC 28677. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Broad Street Church of Christ, 433 E Broad St, Statesville, NC 28677 with preachers Josh Alley, Ben Phillips and Matt Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Abilene Church of Christ, 120 Bell Farm Rd., Statesville, NC 28625.

Belle Hunt Alexander will be remembered for her sweetness, her cheerful spirit, her sharp mind, and the loving way she cared for her family every day. Her life was one of quiet generosity, faith, and enduring love, and her memory will be treasured always.

A special thanks to Laura and all the hospice workers for their kind, loving, and compassionate care for our mom, and for the love, compassion and patience with our family.
