Burl Glen Carr, born on January 2, 1935, in Orgas, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on September 17, 2026, in Statesville, North Carolina. Burl was a man of dedication and integrity, whose life was marked by service to his country, commitment to education, and a deep appreciation for the arts and nature.

Burl proudly served in the Army and National Guard before embarking on a distinguished career in education. As a school teacher, principal, and administrator, he was dedicated to treating his students with respect and fairness, always striving to impart wisdom and knowledge with kindness and understanding. His commitment to education was unwavering, and he touched countless lives with his generosity of spirit and steadfast dedication.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Burl had a rich tapestry of interests that brought joy and fulfillment to his life. He was an avid potter, a passionate archaeologist, and a devoted beekeeper. His love for photography allowed him to capture the beauty of the world around him, while his skills as a talented carpenter were evident in the many projects he undertook with meticulous care.

In his youth, Burl achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was a Golden Glove boxer at the age of 16, demonstrating early on his determination and strength of character.

Burl is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Joyce Arey Carr; his son Bryan Carr and wife Jody; daughters Sara Gilkey and Julie Schroer with husband Chris. He is also survived by his brothers Daryl Carr and wife Ruth, David Carr and wife Theresa, and Tom Carr, and his sister Kay Edwards. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Maggie Stanley with husband David, and Kim Gilkey, as well as several great-grandchildren. He is fondly remembered by his brother-in-law Jeffrey Arey, nieces Vicki Morgan with husband Rhett, and Amy Davis with husband David, along with great-niece Ashley Morgan, great-nephew Wesley Watson, nephew Keith Arey with wife Jennifer, and great-nephews AJ and Austin Arey. His good friend Susan Dunaway and his loyal dog Cassie, who loved to sit on his lap, also mourn his passing.

Burl was preceded in death by his brothers Paul and Roger Carr.

Burl's son, Bryan, aptly described him as a pillar; someone you could always count on. "He was always there when you needed him," Bryan said. "We are glad his life brought him to Statesville."

Services to honor Burl's life are pending, with Reverend Joy Laughridge officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Medi Hospice. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to both Medi Hospice and Home Instead for their compassionate care.

Burl Glen Carr will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his passion for learning, and his profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those he inspired throughout his remarkable life.
