Carlton Roy Moore, of Statesville, North Carolina, passed away on September 11, 2026, following years-long battles with cancer and COPD. He was 81.

Born in southern Ohio to the Reverend Walter and Mary Jane Moore, Carl would say he “majored in football” while attending Olivet College before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Carl saw the Army as an opportunity to learn, grow, mature, and challenge himself while finding direction and purpose. Deciding that being a Reconnaissance Specialist in Vietnam sounded “awfully dangerous,” he enrolled in Officer Candidate School, followed by Rotary Wing Flight School and the Aviation Maintenance Officer’s Course.

Serving with distinction in Vietnam, Carl earned three Distinguished Service Awards as a member of the Soc Trang Tigers of the 121st Aviation Helicopter Company in southern Vietnam. He left the military in 1972 as a dramatic downsizing reduced opportunities for him to grow and advance.

Carl joined International Paper as a sales representative before moving to Statesville as Regional Sales Manager for its Statesville Container Division plant. Among the many highlights of his career was receiving a U.S. patent in 1987.

In the mid-1990s, Carl and his future wife, Nancy Bumgarner, along with a third partner, founded Quality Packaging Services. The company provided highly customized corrugated and wooden packaging for just about anything that needed moving—from colored pens and bulldozer axles to Italian marble and everything in between.

Carl retired in 2009 and was quick to tell you he didn’t know what day of the week it was because, “I played golf today.” Traveling with family to New York City, Boston, and Anna Maria Island were among his favorite retirement activities, offering a welcome respite from his many years of dedication to his work.

Carl is survived by his wife, Nancy Moore; her son, David Bumgarner, his wife, Karen, and their daughter, Bailey; his son, Bradford Moore, his wife, Maura Kate, and their son, Sullivan; his daughter, Carol Game, and her children, Dylan and Taylor Game; Dylan’s son, Steven Giovanni Game; and his brother, Marlin Moore, his wife, Lorraine, and their daughter, Tracie. He was predeceased by his son, Steven Game.

Carl will be remembered for his determination, humor, pride in his work, love of family, and appreciation for a good round of golf.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations in his honor to the Cancer Research Institute or Gary Sinise Foundation.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Nicholson Funeral Home with a visitation to follow.
