Donald J. Childers, 67, of Statesville, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born on September 14, 1958, to Garwood and Jennie Childers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from South Park High School in 1976.
Don was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in the esteemed 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, and was honorably discharged.
He was the devoted husband of 35 years to his beloved wife, Barbara Childers. He was a proud father to Elizabeth (Adam) Harpe and stepfather to Eric (Melody) Lamberth. His greatest joy in life was being “Pops” to his cherished granddaughters—Zoe, Lily, and Leah.
Don was known for his sense of humor, his ability to make anyone feel welcome, and his deep love for others. Above all, he loved Jesus. His faith was the foundation of his life—strong, unwavering, and lived out daily.
He was an active member of F3 Crossroads, focusing on fitness, fellowship, and faith. Don volunteered with his beloved dog, Marta, visiting veterans in nursing homes and bringing comfort and companionship. He also dedicated many weekends to sharing his faith through Kairos Prison Ministry, touching countless lives.
Don retired from Security Central after 30 years of service, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the alarm, security, and electrical industry. He earned numerous awards throughout his career, most recently receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Carolina Security & Low Voltage Association. He was widely respected, well known, and deeply loved throughout the industry.
Outside of work, Don enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved NASCAR and Formula One racing, fishing, and all things Pittsburgh. Music was a true passion—he attended many concerts over the years, especially those of Bob Dylan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Dean Childers.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife and children; his twin brother, David Childers (Rahime); his brothers, Woody (Gail) Childers and William Serenta; his sister, Tina Aresco; his beloved pets, Peggy and Marta; and many cousins and extended loved ones.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who visited, called, and supported Don during his final days. The outpouring of love, prayers, and presence has brought immense comfort and peace during this difficult time and will never be forgotten.
Don’s life was a testament to faith, love, laughter, and service. While his family grieves his loss, they find peace in knowing he is now rejoicing with Jesus.
“We can most truly say that he lived happily ever after, because for him, it was only the beginning of the real story. All his life in this world, and all his adventures had only been the cover and the title page. Now at last he began Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read, which goes on forever, in which every chapter is better than the one before.” — Jared Bowman
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11AM, Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Living Word Ministries Church with Pastor James Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
