Mr. Gary Eugene Lackey, 69, of Statesville, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2011 following a courageous battle with bone cancer at the Gordon Hospice House. Mr. Lackey was born July 8, 1941 in Alexander County and was the son of the late Wilma Lackey Sherrill Sloan and step-fathers, Finn Sherrill and Coite Sloan. He attended Scotts High School and was married to the late Betty Sloop Lackey, who passed away in May 1992. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Merita Bakeries after 26 years of service. He was known as the "bread man". After retirement he worked at the VFW for a lengthy time. He is survived by two daughters, Amy Mason (William) of Statesville, Nicole Russell (Mark) of Hiddenite, one son, Rorry Sloop (Donya) of Gastonia, four grandchildren, Justin and Michael Mason, Alivia and Alexis Russell, three brothers, Tony Sherrill (Shelby) of Statesville, Craig Sherrill (Debbie) of Statesville, Keith Sherrill (Katie) of Gastonia, two sisters, Sonna Massey (Ronnie) of Harmony, Karen James of Statesville and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, may 21, 2011 in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Parks and Rev. Mitch King officiating. Burial will follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Nicholson Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Stephen Wingler, Scott Wingler, Jamie Jarvis, Kevin Sherrill, Justin Sherrill, Josh Sherrill and Antonio Woods. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gordon Hospice House, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625 and online condolences may be made to the family at www.nicholsonfunerals.com Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Gary Eugene Lackey.
