James "JW" McCollum, 97, of Statesville, a beloved member of the community, passed away on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House following a period of declining health. Born on April 6, 1928, in Yadkin County, North Carolina, JW lived a life rich in service and connection with others.

Throughout his career, JW dedicated over 22 years to driving a truck, exemplifying a strong work ethic that was complemented by his 12 years at Clark Equipment. Following these endeavors, he embraced a warm-hearted role as a greeter at Walmart for more than 20 years, where his vibrant personality and infectious enthusiasm left lasting impressions on both customers and colleagues alike. He never met a stranger and always had a kind word for everyone. His love of wearing bowties brought him and those around him joy.

Education was also an important milestone in JW's life. He attended Yadkin County Schools, and after retiring, he made the commendable decision to return to school at the age of 60 to earn his GED—a testament to his belief in lifelong learning and personal growth.

JW was known as a people person, capable of lighting up any room with his smile and approachability. He had a natural affinity for conversation, always making time to talk to those around him. His kind heart extended to visiting nursing homes, where he found joy in cheering up residents with his presence, showcasing his deep compassion for others.

A proud member of Monticello Community Church, JW's faith guided him throughout his life, further establishing his commitment to helping those in need.

He is survived by two sons, Harvey Lee McCollum (Shirley) and Randall McCollum (Ludie); a daughter, Angela Dale; a brother, Mickey McCollum (Sherry); and three sisters, Dorothy Taylor, Shelby Parker, and Diane Jenkins. He will also be remembered fondly by his seven grandchildren, Adrian McCollum, Chris McCollum, Jason McCollum, Stephanie McCollum, as well as Sasha, Torie, and Thomas, and several great-grandchildren.

JW was preceded in death by his father, William Paul McCollum; his mother, Mamie Wooten McCollum; his beloved wife, Lucille Wilhelm McCollum, who passed after 57 years of marriage; as well as his brother, Alton McCollum, and sisters, Hilda Robinson and Lavonne McCrary.

The family will receive friends during a visitation on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel, located at 135 E. Front St., Statesville, NC. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
