James Matthew Piavis

October 28, 1950 — July 2, 2025

Union Grove

James Matthew Piavis, a dedicated pilot and master of the skies, embarked on his final journey on July 2, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on October 28, 1950, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to his loving parents, William Walter and Winnie May Piavis, he was one of five boys. Growing up he loved math, geometry, baseball, and telling stories - skills he would eventually share with his two sons.

In 1970, after some college studying physics and mathematics, he joined the United States Marines. There he made many of his lifelong friends as he advanced to Sergeant.

Upon leaving the Marines he embarked on a remarkable career as a commercial airline pilot, navigating through the dynamic world of aviation amid evolving airline landscapes. He seamlessly transitioned through various airlines due to mergers ultimately landing at American Airlines. He was forever committed to his calling above the clouds, which afforded him the opportunity to fly around the world. Boy, were his arms tired.

He revolved his life around his passions: the Marines, studying the Civil War, flying, woodworking, gardening, his grandchildren, and beloved dog Lady. He was proud of his sons and glowed when he met his grandchildren. Always a generous supporter of his local food bank, Toys for Tots, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and St. Labre Indian School, James will be remembered for his outlandish sense of humor, his generosity for the local community, and deeply disliking Joe Biden.

His love and legacy continue to soar through his sons, Paul (Bethany) H. Piavis and William (Alicia) "Whil" J. Piavis; their mother, Joy A. Alkema; his brothers, George and Paul Piavis; along with sisters-in-law, Barb and Hazel, and his nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his cherished parents, William Walter Piavis and Winnie May Piavis, and his brothers Charles and Bill.

His life, filled with high-flying adventures, down to earth craftsmanship, and his sense of humor, will be celebrated on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 4:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home, 135 E. Front St., Statesville, NC 28677. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of Statesville’s local food banks; Yokefellow Helping Center Click Here , Fifth Street Ministries of North Carolina - Food Distribution Center Click Here, SYBA Food Pantry Click Here; Toys for Tots Click Here, Veterans of Foreign Wars Click Here or the St. Labre Indian School Click Here.

He will find his eternal rest with his family at Cadillac Memorial Gardens West, located at 34224 Ford Rd., Westland, MI 48185.

James Matthew Piavis' life was a testament to ambition, love, and the boundless spirit of exploration. As he takes his final flight, his story remains an inspiration to all who knew him. Those he leaves behind know they will see him again, but for the time being, will miss his jokes and laughter.
