Listen to Obituary

Joan Tesoriero Carbone passed away peacefully at her home in Statesville, North Carolina surrounded by members of her family. She was 94.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dominick J. Carbone, Sr., as well as her parents, Giuseppe and Rachela Tesoriero, her sister, Caterina Galletta, and her brothers, Joseph and Sam Tesoriero, all of Sydney, Australia. She is survived by her children, Maria Lynardakis of Jersey City, New Jersey, Dominick J. Carbone, Jr., M.D. of Statesville, North Carolina, and Joseph Carbone, M.D., of Danville, Virginia, as well as her grandchildren, Elizabeth Carbone, Nicholas Lynardakis, Dominick J. Carbone III, Victor Carbone, and Joseph Carbone. She is also survived by her large family in Australia, including her beloved niece, Margaret Stanton.

Born on January 4, 1931 in Sydney, Australia, Joan was an exceptionally strong and determined woman. After marrying her husband Dominick Sr. and emigrating from Australia to Brooklyn, New York, Joan decided to go back to school in her late thirties, initially attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan and then completing her education at Brooklyn College, ultimately achieving a Master’s Degree in Education. After the family moved to Chester, New Jersey, Joan began a long career as a special needs and remedial reading teacher at Hillsborough High School in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, where she won awards for education and was a leader among the faculty, working until she retired at age 78.

Joan especially loved the time in her life when her children were young and the family would spend summers in Miller Place, New York, on Long Island Sound. An accomplished seamstress, skilled gardener, and wonderful cook, Joan would leave the beach a little earlier than the rest of the family on Sundays to prepare her sensational spaghetti and meatballs, or on special occasions, her incomparable and mouth-watering lasagna. After retiring from Hillsborough, Joan and her husband returned to their home on Fairview Avenue in Miller Place, living there until she moved with her late husband to Statesville at age 93, where she enjoyed sitting in the sun on the deck overlooking Lake Norman.
