John Hill Summers

October 31, 1911 — February 14, 2011

John Hill Summers, 99, of Statesville, passed away Monday, February 14, 2011 at Gordon Hospice House. Mr. Summers was born October 31, 1911 in Iredell County and was the son of the late John W. and Mary Allen Hill Summers. He was a graduate of Iredell County Schools. Mr. Summers was married to Bryde Redmond Summers, who preceded him in death. Mr. Summers was a lifelong resident of the Snow Creek Community. He had a deep love of farming of both crops and cattle and he also took pride in making molasses well into his late 80's. Also, while in his 80's, Mr. Summers operated a sawmill and donated lumber to help build Central Volunteer Fire Department. He was involved in many community affairs and the Grange. Mr. Summers was a lifelong member of Clio Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served as an elder as well as secretary and treasurer for many years. In addition to his parents and wife of 51 years, Mr. Summers was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ronald Raub, Sr. Mr. Summers is survived by three daughters, Joan Summers Raub of Statesville, Libby Summers Stoehr and husband John of Lexington, OH, and Kay Summers of Dearborn, MI. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Ronald Raub, Jr. and wife Dawn of Richmond, VA, Adam Raub and wife Heather of Marietta, GA, Summer Raub Comer and husband Nathan, Brian Stoehr and wife Donita, Jonathan Stoehr and wife Kim, and Tim Stoehr, all of Statesville. Six great-grandchildren also survive, Tre`, Ethan, Stella, and Makenna Raub, Chase Stoehr, and Nate Comer. Funeral service for Mr. Summers will be conducted 11:00 am Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Snow Creek United Methodist Church with Rev. Grant Sharp and Rev. Tom Corbell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at Nicholson Funeral Home.
