Joseph Anthony Kopp, Jr., of Statesville, a beloved educator and passionate gardener, passed away on May 28, 2025, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House following a brief illness. Born in South Bend, Indiana, on July 30, 1940, Joe dedicated his life to teaching and nurturing both students and plants, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Joe’s teaching career began in 1964 in South Bend and spanned over 40 remarkable years, during which he continued his vocation in Michigan and North Carolina. He was proud to have earned two master’s degrees, a testament to his commitment to education and lifelong learning. His influence reached far beyond the classroom, inspiring countless students and colleagues with his dedication to creating a nurturing and engaging learning environment.

In addition to his professional achievements, Joe was an avid Master Gardener at the Iredell County Agricultural Extension. He had an unwavering love for gardening and dedicated much of his time to sharing his passion for plants with others. This enthusiasm for nature reflected his rich appreciation for life’s simple joys, which he embraced wholeheartedly.

Joe was a man of many interests. He kept a daily journal since 1958, with his final entry being dated May 15, 2025, which highlights his reflective nature and dedication to documenting his life's journey. He was also fond of traveling, fishing, and was a loyal fan of Notre Dame Football, finding joy and companionship in these pastimes.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Catherine Holdren Kopp, and their two sons, Jonathan Kopp and David Kopp. Joseph's legacy will live on through his family, who cherish the memories of his love, guidance, and the life lessons he imparted.

Joe is predeceased by his father, Joseph A. Kopp, and his mother, Elizabeth Pabis Kopp. His life was a testament to the values of education, love for family, and a passion for nature. As we remember Joseph, we celebrate a life well-lived and a spirit that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
