Luther Dean Rankin, Sr., affectionately known as "Big Lu" , "Big Luther" and "Brother Luther" passed away peacefully at his home in Statesville, North Carolina, on July 22, 2026, at the age of 64. Born on December 1, 1961, in Statesville, NC, Luther was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Luther spent his career as a dedicated Machine Operator at ShurTape Technologies. He was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his craft. Outside of work, Luther had a deep love for old school music, with Rick James holding a special place in his heart. A diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, he never missed a game and was always ready to cheer on his team.
Luther was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 19 years, Cheryl Patrice Rankin; his father, William Dean Rankin; his brother, Leonard Ramseur; and his sister-in-law, Theresa Rankin.
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his devoted mother, Alice Lackey Rankin; his children, Shemitra Rankin (Joey), Laquita Taye Holmes, Kenan Rucker (Shanae), and Luther Rankin, Jr.; his brothers, William Tresavonne Rankin and Alen Griffin; his sisters, Loretta "Shorty" Rankin, Beverly Rankin, and Allison Yvette Rankin. Luther was also a proud grandfather to Kevon Rucker, Kha-Zyah Rankin (Natalie), Kenan Jovan Rucker, Jr., Keshaun Joray Rucker, Shyheim Stevenson, and Lashiyah Hall.
He is also survived by his mother in law Gwendolyn Rankin, sister-in-law Karen Cowan (Leonard); brothers-in-law, John Robert Rankin and Larry Rankin (Gloria); niece, Zamiyah Young; and nephews, Ralph Young IV, Isiah Young(Dasha), Iszeke Young and Lenard Ramseur.
Luther was known for his warm personality and his signature phrase, "I'm kickin', but not high," which he would often say when asked how he was doing, bringing a smile to those around him.
A funeral service to honor Luther's life will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, August 1, in the chapel of Nicholson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12 PM to 1 PM prior to the service. Luther Dean Rankin, Sr. will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church.
