Mary "Sue" Goodin

Mary "Sue" Pope Goodin passed away Sunday, March 1, 2026.

Sue was born July 10, 1938, in Wilkes County, NC to the late Albert Felix Pope and Edna Land Pope. She married Johnny Goodin on August 15, 1958, and they enjoyed 40 years together before his passing in 1998. Sue found great joy in the quiet artistry of cross-stitching, crocheting, and quilting. She was also an excellent seamstress. With steady hands and a patient heart, she created beautiful pieces that will be cherished by family and friends for years to come.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Albert Felix Pope and Edna Land Pope; her husband, Johnny Goodin; her sister, Sharon White; her brother, Bobby Pope; and her daughter, Donna Goodin Hoover.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Ginger Whalen (John); brothers, Billy Pope and Ronald Pope; sisters, Wanda Bolick and Becky Sawyer; five granddaughters, Betsy Selders, Sallie Hughes, Katie Kelly, Elizabeth Brittain and Madison Hoover; nine great-grandchildren.

A service to honor Sue's life and her Lord will be conducted on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Temple Baptist Church, Statesville, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM. Pastor John Whalen and Dr. Allen Barker will be officiating. Sue will be laid to rest beside her husband at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Olin, NC, with Pastor Randy Mitchell officiating at the graveside. Pall bearers are Steve Redmond, Jeff Redmond, Chris Selders, Russ Kelly, Jon Hughes and Alan Reavis.
