Mary Cecilia St. Marie Werstine, 82, of Harmony, a devoted mother, grandmother, and accomplished nurse, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, at Iredell Memorial Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Born on January 28, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, Mary embodied a spirit of compassion and dedication throughout her life.
A registered nurse by profession, Mary’s career saw her work as a traveling nurse and serve within the Michigan Department of Corrections. Her commitment to caring for others extended beyond her professional life; it was a testament to her character and her deep-seated belief in the values of service and compassion. She showed a tremendous strength throughout her life.
Mary was not only a remarkable nurse but also a vibrant individual who embraced life fully. She was a proud member of the Catholic faith and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), reflecting her commitment to community and country. Mary had a passion for the arts, which she pursued as an accomplished artist. She took joy in traveling and reveling in new experiences, which enriched her life and those around her. A unique aspect of her personality was her love for "clowning," as she often donned a clown costume to entertain her grandchildren and great-grandchildren during their birthday celebrations. Mary also cherished the simple pleasures of playing cards, creating countless fond memories with family and friends.
Mary was the beloved mother of four sons: Glenn Schultz, Jeffery Joseph Schultz, Kristian Schultz (Megan), and James Werstine. She is also survived by three daughters, Theresa Kotsonis, Laura Archuleta (David), and Joyce Robinson, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were a source of immense pride and joy for her.
Mary is preceded in death by her father, Harold St. Marie, and her mother, Mary St. Marie. Her legacy lives on through her family and the countless lives she touched with her kindness and unwavering love.
In celebrating her life, we honor a woman who dedicated her heart to her family, her profession, and her community, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience. Mary St. Marie Werstine will be deeply missed but always remembered.
