Mildred Head

Mildred Mayberry Head, 91, of Hiddenite, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at Gordon Hospice House. Mildred was born in Alexander County on December 16, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Joel Mayberry and Cora Bruce Mayberry. She was married to John David Head, who preceded her in death in 1994. She was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She spent most of her time cooking and caring for her family. She was famous for her biscuits, pinto beans, and sweet potato pies. She is survived by her two sons, Tony Head and his wife, Martha, of Taylorsville, and Benny Head and his wife, Kim, of Hiddenite; six daughters, Louise Grose of Statesville, Frances Patrick and her husband, Ted, of N. Wilkesboro, Joyce Lowrance and husband, Jimmy of Hiddenite, Nancy Duncan and her husband, Randy, of Statesville, Peggy Marlin and her husband Larry, of Statesville and Jane Sloan and her husband Lanny; twelve grandchildren, Lisa Smith and her husband, Andy, Joel Lowrance and his wife, Kristi, Michael Grose, Randall Duncan and his wife Tiffany, Jeffrey Lowrance and his wife, Allison, Angela Duncan Tuttle, Stephen Patrick, Jason Head and his wife, Carrie, Kevin Head, Josh Sloan and his wife, Gina, Jake Sloan, Kelly Head; fifteen great-grandchildren, Jack Lowrance, Hannah Griffin, Carter Lowrance, Danielle Tuttle, Holly Griffin, Haley Griffin, Duncan Tuttle, Jem Lowrance, Grove Lowrance, Kate Duncan, Addison Head, Matthew Duncan, Caroline Duncan, Ava Head, Nathaniel Sloan; two sisters, Mary Martin of Cary, N.C., and Effie Queen of Stony Point; two brothers, Roy Mayberry of Statesville and Russell Mayberry and his wife, Delma, of Statesville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. In addition to her husband, David Head, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Mayberry; two brothers, Howard Mayberry and Carl Mayberry; son-in-law, Landis Grose, and a great-grandson, Brett Duncan. Services celebrating her life will be conducted 3:00 PM Friday, February 25, 2011, at Pisgah United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Duncan and Rev. Dr. Garry Revels officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 PM in the church fellowship hall. Active pallbearers will be Joel Lowrance, Michael Grose, Randall Duncan, Stephen Patrick, Jeffrey Lowrance, Jason Head, Kevin Head, Josh Sloan, and Jake Sloan, all grandsons.
