Peggy Johnson Inscore, 90, of Statesville, passed away peacefully at her residence on August 13, 2026, following a period of declining health.

Peggy often told her family, “When I die, don’t write a long obituary, and don’t lie about me—‘ain’t’ nobody perfect!”

Well, we won’t lie, but 90 years lived so fully takes more words than she would approve. This may be the first time her family has gone against her wishes—and gotten by with it—but here is the truth about our perfectly imperfect matriarch.

Peggy was born on May 6, 1936, in Wilkes County, North Carolina to Shirley Johnson and Stella Mae Coleman Johnson. Her upbringing instilled in her the values of hard work, determination, faith, and caring for others. Those qualities helped shape her into a loving and supportive wife to William Robert Inscore, who preceded her in death.

Together, they brought into the world Peggy’s greatest treasures: their two sons, William Robert “Ted” Inscore and Joey Shirl Inscore. Whether she was cheering for Ted from the sidelines of countless ball fields or showing off her love of dancing while Joey played the banjo, Peggy gladly—and proudly—told anyone who would listen how much she loved her boys. She would also tell you they gave her the greatest gifts of all: their love and her grandchildren.

Family was at the heart of everything Peggy did. Her home was always open, with a guarantee of the best home-cooked Southern food you’ll find. If you knew Peggy, you knew she was going to feed you—and anyone was welcome at her table and No one left Peggy’s home hungry, whether they had planned to eat or not.

Peggy’s love did not stop with her family. She cooked, cared for, and checked on others. Central to Peggy’s life was her faith and devotion to her church community. A longtime member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and deeply loved her church family. She maintained perfect attendance for many years—a true testament to her steadfast spirit, commitment, and sense of belonging.

Peggy said what she thought, could pull off a great prank, and brought more laughter than could ever be counted. Her honesty, wit, and humility were known to everyone who loved her. With Peggy, you rarely had to wonder what she was thinking—she was usually kind enough to tell you, like it or not.

From commanding the basketball court in her youth to bowling, dancing, crocheting, quilting, and cooking, She was determined, and always striving to do her best while including others along the way. Her skilled hands created heirlooms for her family to treasure; carrying her love forward for generations.

Peggy was 90 years of love, laughter, faith, and strength. She was a guiding light who supported her family through heartache and joy, fed anyone who came through her door, made beautiful things with her hands, and never missed an opportunity for a laugh.

In the honest and characteristic way Peggy requested, we will remember her without pretending she was perfect. We will remember her as something much better: completely, wonderfully, and authentically Peggy—and loved beyond measure.

In addition to her parents and husband, Peggy was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Josh Inscore and Branson Inscore.

Peggy is survived by her sons, Joey Inscore and Ted Inscore (Jill), four grandchildren, Mykel Inscore Myers, Amie Gregorio (Pedro), Jasmyn Lowe, Mac Inscore, 13 great-grandchildren, Cru Myers, Echo Myers, Valentina Fox, Joseph Fox, Caleb Inscore, Isaiah Gregorio, Nathalia Gregorio, Gabriel Gregorio, Isaac Gregorio, Giovanni Gregorio, Gavino Gregorio, Ivanna Gregorio, Mateo Gregorio, and three great-great-grandchildren, Gaia, Vivi and Evalyn, who continue to honor her memory with their lives.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on August 18, 2026, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, 11635 Statesville Rd, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Burial will follow in the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 2781 S. Windy Gap Rd., Windy Gap, NC 28659. Following the burial, the family will return to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church for a meal and to greet family and friends.
