Sonja Lafree Jenkins

Sonja Lafree (Smith) Jenkins, 78, of Statesville, NC, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026, in her hometown, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Born on November 15, 1947, in Statesville, NC, to Lonnie Grady Smith and Hazel Renegar Smith, Sonja lived a life devoted to service, compassion, and family.

A proud graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing, Sonja began a remarkable career in healthcare that spanned over 40 years. She also served her country honorably as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Her dedication to caring for others was matched only by her love for her family, whom she cherished deeply.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Perry Wayne Jenkins; her daughters, Kelly Cockeram (Erick), Karmen Davidson and Kendra Liles (Chris); and her seven grandchildren, Chloe Cockeram, Carter Cockeram, Caleb Davidson, Cruz Davidson, Ava Cockeran , Owen Cockeran and Easton Liles.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Grady and Hazel Smith; and her sisters Margaret Ostwalt, Barbara Jean Smith, Kay Green and Lonja Joyner, her twin sister.

A service will be held at Western Avenue Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 with visitation starting at 1 PM and service beginning at 2 PM followed by a private family burial service at New Sterling ARP Church Cemetery where she will be laid to rest. Pallbearers will be Carter Cockeram, Caleb Davidson, Cruz Davidson, Chris Morrow, Chad Alexander, Blue Bentley, and Alan Ruppe.

Sonja was known for her gentle spirit and steadfast heart. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
