Thomas Wayne Palmer, aged 85, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2026, at his home in Stony Point, North Carolina. Born on June 30, 1941, in Greenwood, South Carolina, he was the beloved son of the late Cromer Palmer and Annie Laurie Edwards Palmer.
Thomas graduated from Greenwood High School in 1960 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Lander College in 1967. His dedication to his studies laid the foundation for a distinguished career spanning over three decades. He retired from the Langley Processing Division of UM&M, Inc., where he began as a chemist and served in various management roles with the present owners, Hexcel Inc., for 32 years.
His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. Thomas proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy in June 1960. As an aviation electronics technician, he achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class and was a valued member of VF-144 at Naval Air Station Miramar. His service included two Far East Cruises aboard the USS Kitty Hawk.
A man of deep faith, Thomas was an active member of Elk Shoals ARP Church, where he served as Deacon, Elder, and Clerk of Sessions. His community involvement was further exemplified through his dedicated service as board secretary of the Iredell County Chapter of the American Red Cross for nine years.
Thomas was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Marianna Alexander Palmer, his sister, Ruth Ann Palmer Huffling, and his parents. He is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer "Andi" Alexandra Palmer Combs and her husband, Scott, as well as his sister, Sarah Ellen Palmer Morse.
A private graveside service will be held where family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-5104, in memory of Thomas Wayne Palmer.
Thomas will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his faith, and his country. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
